11/17/24 Prepared Edge Hand Applique with Linda Neal



Linda is an award-winning quilter from McKinney, TX. She has won numerous awards from: AQS Paducah (5 ribbons), AQS Phoenix, Houston IQA, Pacific International Quilt Festival, Shipshewana Quilt Festival, NQA, Quilt Odyssey, Road to California, the Dallas Quilt show (3 Viewer's Choice, Betty J Carpenter Hand Workmanship award, many 1st place ribbons) as well as many local quilt shows. Linda's winning quilts are primarily applique with a hint of English Paper Piecing and embellishments. Her goal is to make each block in the quilt her favorite. Her motto "I can't do easy" shows in every quilt. Jackie Brown has quilted all of Linda's quilts.


Supply List
1.Regular Starch (NOT heavy duty) with small container (aerosol or non -aerosol)
2.Roxanne’s Glue Baste It
3.Stiletto- one with a good sharp metal point that feels comfortable to you
4.Brush- 1/4 in. angled paint brush from the painting section at a craft store
5.Small craft iron- Clover wedge iron is awesome.  If you have another brand of small iron that’s fine- just make sure it gets HOT
6.Cheri’s Cool Tool- Preferred. (Available from: cheriscrystals.com) A clover mini iron will work, but not as well.
7.Flower head pins or similar
8.Scissors For fabric I prefer serrated – Kai® purple handle or Karen Kay Buckley® middle size - light blue handle
9.Scissors For paper:  curved and straight scissors in a variety of sizes.  (I use Kai® 4 inch straight and curved, and Kai® 5 1/2 curved)
10.Applique Scissors- straight, sharp tip
11.Clover 1/4 bias maker (it MUST be the green one-NOT the purple one)
12.Wool ironing mat ( size 12X18 or similar) with scrap of Cotton fabric to cover it or June Taylor® Quilter’s Cut
13.Press board (approx. 12in X 12 in size) with a piece of scrap cotton fabric to cover it.
14.1/4 white foam core board - available from Walmart, Michaels or office supply store cut to size of your project  15.Parchment paper - roll or pre-cut sheets - you need 1 piece the size of your project
16.Blue painters’ tape
17.Freezer paper 8½" x 11"- Cut-Rite® is my favorite brand. Jenkins is Ok too
18.Ultra-fine Sharpie® or Micron® pen- any color
19.Pencil n Silicone hot pad or silicone iron pad- keeps your irons from burning tables or falling onto floor during class 20.Aleene’s OK to Wash It ®
21.Clover Wonder Clips-optional
22.Extension cord- a short cord with surge protection to plug in both of your irons at your workspace n Ott Light – if desired (Red Boot has multiplug surge protectors and individual task lamps at each workstation)
23.Your pattern, copy of your pattern on freezer paper reversed, copy of pattern to work off, fabric for project (pre-washed is preferred) background fabric, thread to match applique pieces, and your favorite applique needle. (I use a Size 8 straw)
24.anything else needed to sew or complete your project.
25.Something to cover your work at night 


Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: This class is geared for the beginning applique student as well as those experienced in hand applique. Students will gain knowledge in the freezer paper/starch method and learn tips and tricks for improving their hand applique.
