01/15/26 Finished Edge Hand Applique with Linda Neal

Join award winning quilter, Linda Neal, for 4days/3 nights of hand applique. This class is for all levels of students. Bring an applique project in progress or start a new project as you learn how to make perfect circles, curves, sharp points, deep V's, stems, skinny stems and very, very skinny stems. (Linda's own technique) This class teaches the prepared edge technique using freezer paper, starch, and a small iron. Each piece is glue-basted together and then onto the background fabric in preparation for hand stitching. Students will work on their own project at their own pace. It will be a fun, informative, relaxing retreat at Red Boot!
Preparing your Pattern for Red Boot Retreat
In order to avoid tracing your pattern during your valuable retreat time, please prepare your pattern templates using your home inkjet copy machine in advance.
** Please bring a regular copy of your pattern on plain copy paper that we can pin into/glue for class. Always keep your original pattern in perfect shape.
** Make SURE that any copying you are doing with your pattern, the image is at the SAME SIZE (100%)
Supplies needed:
Inkjet printer (NOT a laser printer-VERY important)
Pattern you want to use in class
Freezer paper 8 ½ X 11 (Cut Rite heavy duty is best, then C. Jenkins is next best, followed by any brand you own that goes through well your inkjet printer)
Clear Vellum 8 ½ X 11 (purchased at Michaels or Staples) For Option 2 below.
Computer (For option 1 or 3 below)
**For freezer paper/starch applique templates, the pattern must be mirror image and printed on the PAPER SIDE of the freezer paper. This can be done in several ways:
Option 1: Scan your pattern and pull it into a Paint* or a similar program that can reverse your pattern to its mirror image. Print that image onto the paper side of your freezer paper. Make 2-3 copies of your image onto freezer paper. (Sometimes when you cut out 1 shape, it will ruin the one next to it.)
Option 2: (No computer needed) Put a sheet of vellum in your copier and copy the pattern onto the vellum. Then flip the sheet of vellum over and place on copier. (so now its reversed) Put 2-3 pieces of freezer paper into your paper tray and copy the image onto the PAPER side of your freezer paper. For MOST printers, freezer paper is placed shiny side up in the paper try and then when it pulled into the printer it will print on the paper side.
Option 3: Some pattern designers provide reverse templates. Those can be purchased and printed out on freezer paper. Or they can be sent to a cutting machine (Cricut, Scan and Cut, Cameo) and cut out on freeze paper.
